The life cycle environmental impacts and cost of a 550-megawatt (MW) oxy-combustion supercritical pulverized coal (OxyPC) power plant with carbon capture and operating at an 85 percent capacity factor is evaluated in this analysis. The performance, emissions, and material requirements of the power plants are defined by the Base Case in the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) report Advanced Oxy-combustion Technology for Pulverized Bituminous Coal Power Plants. This power plant is combined with the rest of the life cycle to provide a full inventory and translation of that inventory into environmental impacts. The captured carbon dioxide (CO2) is evaluated as either being sequestered in a saline aquifer (carbon capture and sequestration [CCS]) or as used in CO2-enhanced oil recovery (EOR), where CO2 is sequestered in the oil-bearing formation.
