This presentation discusses how unmanned aerial systems (UASs) operating in consequence management scenarios can obtain and transmit critical information on various hazards and inform real-time decision making while reducing risks to first responders. The presentation addresses a project using a Sandstorm UAS, a fixed-wing development platform that, although it can enable longer travel and operational times, is subject to maneuverability limitations that complicate the collision avoidance required to avoid post-disaster hazards. A modular situational awareness and communications infrastructure is required to support autonomous UAS mission needs.
