This article is a comment on the research reported on by R. Sugisaki and K. Mimura concerning the origin of hydrocarbons in mantle xenoliths and other mantle-derived rocks such as basalt.Several lines of research suggest that the source of the hydrocarbons is abiogeneic. This research may have important implications for petroleum exploration and production.
