A rapid, direct and clean approach has been developed to synthesize metal (Pd, Ni and Cu) nanowires and nanorods using multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) as templates and supercritical CO{sub 2} as the reaction medium. Filling of metals into MWCNTs to form nanowires or nanorods was easily achieved by the simple hydrogen reduction of metal-b-diketone complexes in supercritical CO{sub 2}.
