Dynamic Corrosion Studies for the High Flux Isotope Reactor
- Oak Ridge National Lab. (ORNL), Oak Ridge, TN (United States)
The results of a testing program to examine the long-term corrosion behavior of materials of interest to the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) are presented, and their significance to the operation of the HFIR is discussed. The test environment was water, adjusted to a pH of 5.0 with nitric acid, at 100°C and at flow rates ranging from 0.5 fpm to 81 fps. Under all flow conditions, the aluminum alloys corroded at low rates, 0.2 mpy at the higher velocities and less than 0.1 mpy at the lowest velocities.
