Energy-based dynamic security assessment tools for maintaining voltage stability. Final report
- Wisconsin Univ., Madison, WI (United States). Dept. of Electrical and Computer Engineering
The research conducted under this project examined the feasibility of ``Energy-Based`` Dynamic Security Assessment (DSA) measures for determining the vulnerability of large scale power systems to problems Of voltage instability and collapse. Theoretical background for the Energy-Based Voltage Security Measure was established in [1], [2] and [3]. Therefore, one of the primary goals Of this project has been to validate and extend the existing formulation of the Energy-Based Voltage Security Measure in a suitable ``benchmark`` system. To facilitate this evaluation, and to serve as a basis for future applications, this project developed prototype computational routines for computing energy based security measures using the MATLAB environment [4]. The project characterized the quality and implementation of this measure on several points: its accuracy in indicating threats to system security, use of sparsity to speed of computation, and utility of the measure in identifying corrective strategies when threats to security are identified. Extensions to the existing formulation of the energy based security measure centered on improved methods of representing generator reactive power limitations.
