Efficiency and flexibility in operations are two of the main goals for natural gas transmission pipeline operators. These improvements can provide competitive, cost-effective advantages with significant performance improvements and overall savings. Dresser-Rand`s Turbo Products Division, Olean, NY, developed a pipeline compressor to meet customer requirements for these goals and improvements. A benchmark installation has been the Petronas Gas Berhad (PGB) Kuantan station in Malaysia where three units are operating. The plant has been on-line since 1993. The compressor is a highly-efficient pipeline booster and is one in a series which were designed to match the popular small industrial gas turbines currently available in the 5--15,000 horsepower range. It complies with stringent API standards which are specified by many customers. This paper reviews the standards and design capacity of these compressors along with the anticipated operating cost.
