Synthetic-based drilling muds (SBM) offer the performance characteristics of oil-based muds (OBM) and the environmental advantages of water-based muds (WBM). Despite their high cost per barrel, SBMs can significantly reduce overall drilling cost per foot by eliminating costly OBM cuttings disposal and generating performance-based cost savings over WBM. However, lost circulation can quickly erode the cost savings generated by SBMs. Understanding SBM rheology is a critical element in lost circulation prevention. The concept of Virtual Rheology{trademark} lowers the risk of lost circulation and empowers drillers to take advantage of SBM performance with a higher degree of economic confidence. This paper reviews the computer software used to model these properties.
