The computational revolution observed in the methods of scientific research needs to be recognized in educational establishments at all levels. Although some institutions have responded by changing their programs, rigid degree requirements generally have not allowed time for learning about a whole body of radically new research tools. These tools and the associated research methodology, used in a range of science and engineering areas, include modern algorithms, visualization and network tools, as well as basic concepts of modern computer architectures. Besides curriculum issues, there is no textbook that surveys modern high-performance tools. Although many new books deal with some of these issues in depth, there is no set of printed materials for a general introduction to computation and networks. Recognizing the longstanding need for such a curriculum, the US Department of Energy initiated the Computation Science Education Project in September 1991 in order to develop an experiment syllabus for teaching interdisciplinary computational science. CSEP gathered 35 volunteer authors to produce and test a set of hypermedia teaching materials, the initial version of the ``e-book`` was completed in November 1993 and exhibited at Supercomputing `93. Available over the World Wide Web this electronic book is in the public domain and accessible to anyone connected to the Internet, so educators are now using it to modify their courses. As part of community outreach, CSEP offers training workshops for educators who wish to teach directly from the e-book, and sends staff members to forums on computational science education at professional society meetings.
