Chapter 6: Recent Advances in Perovskite Tandem Devices
- National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), Golden, CO (United States)
Organic-inorganic halide perovskites have recently emerged as a new class of light absorbers in solar conversion applications. The power conversion efficiency of single-junction perovskite solar cells (PSCs) has already surpassed conventional polycrystalline thin-film solar cell technologies and is even projected to be competitive with single-crystalline solar cells. Along with the continued effort on further advancing single-junction PSC technology, many research groups have started to develop perovskite-based tandem devices with the ultimate goal to move beyond the Shockley-Queisser limit for single-junction devices. In this book chapter, we first discuss basic concepts and ideas for general tandem devices in photovoltaic (PV) and photo-electrochemical (PEC) applications, spectrum and current matching, and typical device architectures (monolithic vs. multi-terminal). We then focus on the advantages and the main challenges of using perovskite materials, both in tandem with existing PV materials and in all-perovskite tandem devices. Bandgap engineering is essential to achieve efficient perovskite tandem devices. We discuss several strategies of bandgap engineering through composition alloying as well as existing issues in both intrinsic material properties and material processing difficulties. A key component to tandem devices is the transparent interconnection layers/electrodes. We review and comment on some possible candidates of this interconnection layer. Finally, we review the current status and provide future prospective in this field by summarizing state-of-the-art perovskite tandem PV and PEC devices.
