Zirconium dioxide ZrO{sub 2} is of considerable practical interest as an optical material with a high refraction index, a high-temperature solid electrolyte, and constructional ceramics. As all these properties are due to the electronic subsystem of this compound, it is of interest to study its electronic structure. The band structure of the cubic phase of zirconium dioxide is obtained by employing the LMTO method. Its PV-diagram is calculated to determine the equilibrium lattice constant. The emission ZrL{sub III}-spectrum of this compound is interpreted.
