Gas-Sheet view screen for intense ion and electron beams
- RadiaBeam Technologies, LLC, Santa Monica, CA (United States)
Particle accelerators for high-energy physics are driving beam intensities to extreme peak and average power, requiring novel schemes for precise beam characterization. The design of non-destructive transverse profile diagnostics is necessary for online measurements, as well as for machine and personnel protection. In this project we investigated the design of a non-destructive monitor that uses a tailored gas sheet profile at an interaction region to resolve the transverse profile of intense beams. The gas particles generate ionization products when the beam passes through the region. The ions are collected in an electrostatic field and transported to and resolved on a detector. In a well-engineered device, the distribution of the ions at the detector has a one-to-one correlation with the particle beam distribution. In this project, a complete system for a gas-sheet viewscreen was designed with specific application to very intense proton beams at the Integrable Optics Test Accelerator (IOTA) facility. The prototype design includes considerations for profile resolution, gas delivery, differential pumping, compactness, and ease of integration into existing facilities.
