The history of NORM in oil and gas production follows closely the history of the discovery of radioactivity in the first part of the century. As such, it will help to remember during the course of our discussion that the discovery of radioactivity is less than 100 years old. Consequently, it is probably one of the most poorly understood scientific phenomena by the general public. This is amply demonstrated by the unfounded fear most members of the public have for anything radioactive and the continuing controversy about just what to do with any form of radioactive waste. Nevertheless, NORM was there with us when we first started producing oil out of the earth. In 1918, a CAnadian paper was published on radioactivity in natural gases. In the 30s, elevated radium levels were detected in Russian oil fields. Industry still measures NORM in formations to evaluate well geology via certain types of well logging. It wasn`t until NORM was found in significant quantities in some North Sea Production platforms at 1981 that specific procedures began to be developed for NORM management.
