Self-modulated oscillation in fast-flow lasers with an unstable resonator

Characteristics of self-modulated oscillation of a gas laser with a fast transverse flow of an active medium through an unstable resonator with nonuniform mirrors producing a local increase of loss close to the optical axis of a resonator are calculated. Boundaries of the domain of existence of the self-modulated oscillation in relation to an additional loss are determined. It is shown that the laser may have a rather high energy efficiency, provided the parameters of its resonator are optimized. The pulse repetition rate varies with the displacement of the optical axis of the resonator with respect to the mirror aperture. 12 refs., 4 figs.
