The project has produced a working system (OpenEdge) that orchestrates dynamic on-demand creation of network resources. The system has been deployed in two operating networks (The City of Ammon, Idaho and the Albion Telephone Company). OpenEdge is a software platform that enables Open Networks and moves control of the broadband access network to the subscriber edge where control is dynamically shared with all network stakeholders. This makes it possible for services to reside in dedicated virtual channels or network slices, which give service providers a trusted environment in which to compete and innovate and allows subscribers on the network to choose when and how they consume services from each provider. The current OpenEdge architecture involves three distinct components. The first component, FlowOps implements the network abstraction offered to service and application providers and realizes the underpinnings of that abstraction on the physical network. The second component is the OpenEdge architectural component, SecureOps, which deals with authenticated access to the network and services/applications available on the network. The third component is the Virtual Broadband Gateway (VBG), a device that replaces the traditional Optical Network Terminal (ONT) to terminate broadband networks at the subscriber premise.
