  1. Sandia National Laboratories, Albuquerque, NM (United States)

PDCWEAR predicts individual cutter forces, temperatures, and wear rates for rock drill bits with polycrystalline diamond compact (PDC) cutters and calculates the effects of wear on bit performance. Single-cutter test results are used to provide a measure of rock drillability, and theoretical considerations are employed to account for interaction among closely spaced cutters on the bit. In addition, integrated bit performance parameters, such as the total weight-on-bit, drilling torque, bit bending moments, and bit side forces are estimated for a range of specified penetration rates. This information can be used to guide bit design efforts and to assess drilling performance over the life of the bit. The results are written to data files in tabular form as well as in a form suitable for plotting. The accompanying interactive preprocessor, FORMAT, can be used to prepare the three PDCWEAR input files.
