Time Domain Reflectometry is a straight forward method for identifying and accurately locating faults in any type of dual conductor cable. The technique relies upon simple transmission line theory and pulse reflection principles to indicate both the nature of a problem and its location. The Time Domain Reflectometer or TDR is a simple instrument combining both an oscilloscope and pulsing signal source in one convenient unit. Time Domain Reflectometers are commonly used to locate problems in both metallic cables (MTDR) and fiber optic cables (OTDR). The focus of this paper will be on the Metallic Time Domain Reflectometer and its applications in cable maintenance.
