Volatility of Aqueous Sodium Hydroxide, Bisulfate and Sulfate

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:1436974
The partitioning of sodium hydroxide, and mixtures of sodium sulfate/sodium hydroxide and sulfuric acid/sodium bisulfate/sodium sulfate from aqueous solutions to the vapor phase were investigated in laboratory-scale experiments to 350°C. These experiments were carried out in a platinum-lined autoclave with provision for sampling the liquid and vapor phases through platinum tubing fitted with water cooled condensers and inert PEEK© valves and tubing. Equilibrated samples of both phases were analyzed by ion chromatography, and by acidimetric titration whenever feasible. The liquid-phase pH was controlled by either the presence of excess sodium hydroxide or by two buffering mixtures of sulfuric acid/bisulfate and sulfate/bisulfate to confirm the reliability of the pH control.
