Temperature and strain rate effect on hot formability of 6061 + 20 vol. % SiC whiskers

The effects of temperature and strain rate on hot formability of 6061 + 20 vol. % SiC whiskers were investigated by torsion tests carried out in the temperature range from 250 to 450{degree}C, with strain rate varying from 5 {center_dot} 10{sup {minus}3} to 5 {center_dot} 10{sup {minus}1} s{sup {minus}1}. Experimental results show that, in all test conditions investigated, the MMC was much stronger than the matrix alloy owing to different deformation behavior. This is confirmed by the analysis of activation energy that resulted dependent on temperature; in particular, in the temperature range from 350 to 450{degree}C it was equal to 234 kJ/mol and lower at lower temperatures. Microstructural evolution in hot deformation was related to the material behavior in various test conditions.
