This paper evaluates 3-D orthogonal woven Carbon/Epoxy composites with holes for joint locations. The preforms were manufactured on a newly patented automatic 3-D weaving machine developed at North Carolina State University. The machine uses an electronic jacquard head and is capable of weaving the holes in the preforms without cutting the fibers. Composites were made at NC A&T State University by a resin transfer molding technique using an epoxy resin and a special mold which allows the holes to be formed. Holes were also made in other samples by regular drilling. Specimens were subjected to tensile tests. Comparison is made between samples without holes and samples with holes created by the two methods.
