We have studied the neutron dissociation reaction $$n+p \to p\pi^- +p$$ for incident neutron momenta between 50 and 300 GeV/c. Data were obtained using a wire spark chamber spectrometer located in the Meson Detector Building of the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. The integrated dissociation cross section was found to be nearly momentum independent over the momentum interval studied. A strong correlation was observed between the square of the four-momentum transfer (t) and the $$p\pi^-$$ rest mass (M), as well as between t and the $$p\pi^-$$ center of mass decay direction. The observed mass distribution consisted of both narrow resonance-like structure and a continuum. Moments of the decay angular distributions revealed a rich structure suggesting contributions from many partial waves. Reasonable success was achieved in explaining the data in terms of a Deck-type model.
