Long term behavior of polymer based composite systems under complex loadings

Polymer based composite systems exhibit a time-dependent behavior due to the viscoelastic nature of the polymer matrix and the properties of the interaction regions between matrix and fibres. If one considers a unidirectional reinforced lamina the time dependent behavior is most explicit in the transverse direction to the fibres. Function of the stacking sequence and the stress field, viscoelastic properties are present in a laminate with a distribution consequence of characteristic response times, function of the orientation. Another of the viscoelastic nature of the matrix are the stress transfers between matrix and fibres in a lamina, and between lamina with different oriented reinforcements in a laminate. Those time dependent effects are also present in non-laminated structural components, as obtained by filament winding, braiding, pultrusion and pullwinding. The prediction of the residual properties of the system for a given life time is essential for the safe design of structural components. Different methods for the durability analysis of composite based structural components will be discussed. The possibility of combination of some of the methods will be analyzed. Special attention will be given to the interactive effects of different loading conditions and the influence of environmental conditions. The elements of a large real time testing program will be discussed.
