We discuss various relativistic models describing ground-state properties of spherical nuclei. Relativistic mean-field and Hartree-Fock theories, which serve as a starting point for subsequent models, are reviewed. Using a density-dependent parametrization of the Dirac-Brueckner {ital G} matrix in nuclear matter, we achieve an effective Dirac-Brueckner-Hartree-Fock model for finite nuclei. Finite nuclei results obtained with this model are compared with the less advanced density-dependent mean-field model, which simulates Dirac-Brueckner calculations for nuclear matter as well. It is shown that the effective Dirac-Brueckner-Hartree-Fock approach most successfully reproduces experimental data concerning spherical nuclei.
