Search for the Top Quark in Lepton Plus Jets Events at the Collider Detector at Fermilab
- Purdue U.
A search for the Standard Model top quark in the lepton plus jets channel in $$p\bar{p}$$ collisions at $$\sqrt{s}$$ = 1800 GeV is described. The analysis was carried out on 19.3 $$pb^{-1}$$ of data collected with the Collider Detector at Fermilab in the 1992-1993 run. Events were selected by requiring a. high $$P_T$$ electron or muon, missing transverse energy, three or more jets, and a. large global sum of transverse energy. To further reduce background processes in the final event sample, at least one non-isolated lepton was required to act as a. tag for the b-quarks. The expected background rate in this analysis is 1.80 ± 0.17 events. 7 events survive all the cuts. The probability for the expected background fluctuating to $$\ge$$ 7 events is 0.29% or 2.76$$\sigma$$.
