Amorphous silicon (a-Si) photovoltaic modules can now convert sunlight into electricity with initial efficiencies exceeding 10 percent. After a few months of operation, the modules stabilize at 85 to 90 percent of their initial efficiency. By the mid-1990s, manufacturing plants should be producing a-Si modules at a cost of about $1 per watt at a rate of about 10 megawatts per year. In the longer term, with increased plant size and higher efficiencies, module costs could fall below $0.50 per watt.
