Zeolite-based SCR catalysts developed by Norton Co. have been applied for NO{sub x} removal from the flue gas emitted by coal fired boilers. Presence of sulfur oxides (SO{sub x}) in the flue gas of such coal-fired boilers pose several problems to the conventional SCR system. Some of these are: catalyst deactivation by sulfation, monolithic channel plugging by sulfated fly-ash leading to increase in pressure drop and uneven flow pattern, and so on. Norton`s experience with the zeolite-based SCR catalyst will be presented for comparison with the conventional TiO{sub 2} based catalyst performance under high SO{sub 2} environment. This presentation will analyze the effects of variables such as inlet SO{sub 2} concentration type of support, promotional effects, etc., on the activity, selectivity, and stability of the SCR catalyst in coal fired applications. Additionally, commercial aspects of SCR applications for coal-fired boilers will also be discussed.
