The effects of support material and noble metal on the catalytic oxidation of diesel exhaust gases

Conference ·
OSTI ID:142016
The catalytic oxidation of harmful CO and hydrocarbons on Al{sub 2}O{sub 3}-, SiO{sub 2}- and TiO{sub 2}- supported Pt, Pd, and Rh catalysts has been investigated in the presence of excess oxygen. The effects of noble metals and washcoat modifications on the SO{sub 2} deactivation has been measured in the laboratory tests. The sulfur storage and SO{sub 2} oxidation to SO{sub 3} on different washcoats have been demonstrated with thermodynamic calculations, storage and activity tests with Pt, Pd, Pt-Pd, and Pt-Rh as active metals. The catalytic reaction of NO to NO{sub 2} and other nitrogen compounds depended on noble metal, washcoat, and their interaction. The catalytically inert Al{sub 2}O{sub 3} stores sulfur, but inert SiO{sub 2} and active TiO {sub 2} were resistant to sulfur contamination.
