The development and commercialization of palladium-only closed-loop control automotive catalysts represents a major technology breakthrough. The use of a single noble metal catalyst formulation to simultaneously control hydrocarbon (HC), CO and NO{sub x} emissions about the stoichiometric point was first proposed in 1968. However, only recently has such technology been developed, extensively evaluated by automobile manufactures and conclusively demonstrated superior in meeting the more stringent Federal and California emission standards. The evolution of Pd-only technologies is discussed, and areas of application are defined. Advanced Pd-only three-way catalyst technologies not only can have the activity and durability performance of commercial Pt/Rh catalysts, but also have superior performance advantages and offer cost reduction opportunities. Pd improves HC emissions for gasoline, ethanol or methanol/gasoline blends, and natural gas applications. These Pd technologies have superior thermal stability to conventional Rh-containing technologies for higher exhaust temperature applications, which may be necessary for achieving California`s low emission vehicle (LEV) and ultra low emission vehicle (ULEV) HC standards. Cleaner fuels an improved emission system controls having significantly contributed to the acceptance of Pd-only technologies for automotive applications.
