Interaction of NO and CO on Rh/SiO{sub 2} and Ce-Rh/SiO{sub 2} catalysts: A transient in-situ IR spectroscopy study
- Univ. of Akron, OH (United States)
An understanding of the interaction of Ce with Rh for the CO-NO reaction is essential for further improving the performance of automobile catalysts under conditions ranging from fuel-rich to fuel-lean environments. The objective of this paper is to investigate the effect of surface state of the Rh/SiO{sub 2} and Ce-Rh/SiO{sub 2} catalysts on the CO-NO reaction by transient in-situ IR spectroscopy. Exposure of adsorbed CO to NO at 298 and 373 K resulted in total displacement of linear and bridge Co on Rh/SiO{sub 2} and Ce-Rh/SiO{sub 2}, and gem-dicarbonyl on oxidized Rh/SiO{sub 2}. The CO displacement led to NO chemisorption as NO{sup {minus}}, NO{sup +}, or as a cyanide species. Steady state CO-NO reaction at 723 K resulted in the formation of isocyanate adsorbed on the support and metal. Ce-Rh/SiO{sub 2} showed greater CO displacement and NO chemisorption. Steady state isotopic transient analyses examiens the relation between surface state and coverage and intrinsic kinetics of the reaction.
