The Department of Energy, under its Office of Fossil Energy has for the past several years conducted research and development related to the use of biotechnology for the recovery, conversion, and upgrading of fossil fuel resources. Biological processes offer several potential advantages over traditional physical and thermal methods for processing fossil energy resources: less energy intensity, higher efficiency, and more benign environmental impact. Specific activities in the Fossil Energy problem include: microbial liquefaction of coal, microbial gasification of coal, microbial desulfurization of coal, microbial removal of gaseous components, and microbial recovery and processing of oil and gas resources. Each of these activities will be briefly summarized, and plans for the future will be described.
