The water transport properties of Nafion{reg_sign} and related perfluorosulfonate ionomers are critical in the use of these materials as fuel cell electrolytes. The authors will report transport parameters measured for several available perfluorosulfonate membranes under a variety of conditions. The water sorption characteristics, diffusion coefficient of water, conductivity, and eletroosmotic drag coefficient will be compared for these materials. Specific emphasis will be on water content dependence of electroosmotic drag coefficients. NMR pulsed gradient and imaging studies of water in these membranes, and the dependence of water uptake and transport properties on temperature.
