Free radical polymerization is the most widely used polymerization technique for the preparation of commercial vinyl as well as laboratory vinyl polymers. However, unlike other addition polymerization techniques, the control of polymer architecture via free radical chemistries is difficult and remains an elusive goal for synthetic polymer chemists. At least six different strategies for using free radical chemistry to control polymer architecture have been discussed in the literature. These six strategies will be critically reviewed with recent literature examples. Particular attention will be focused on two strategies: macroradicals and iniferters.
