High-barrier structural thermoplastics based on diglycidyl ethers
- Dow Chemical Co., Midland, MI (United States)
Phenoxy-type thermoplastics, formed by stoichiometrically balanced polymerizations of diglycidyl ethers with dinucleophilic monomers, combine excellent barrier properties with engineering mechanical performance and good processing characteristics. Both amorphous (Tg=65-161{degrees}C) and crystalline variations of this thermoplastic exhibit oxygen transmission rates as low as 0.04-1.50 cc-mil/100 in{sup 2}-atm-day (60% RH), accompanied by break strengths of up to 8800 psi (11 - 60% elongation) and moduli of 350-490,000 psi. Several thermoplastics are exceptionally tough, with notched Izod impact values ranging from 18-26 ft-ib/in and the amorphous resins are transparent with, in some instances, remarkably low color (YI=2.1). In addition to comments about structural effects on the O{sub 2} barrier of the polymer; CO{sub 2} and moisture barrier properties of the polymers will be described.
