This paper will present and discuss in a broader context new results on salt-free polyelectrolytes solutions with a hope to shed light on this controversial issue. (1) Light scattering experiments on binary mixtures of polyelectrolytes indicate that {open_quotes}the polyelectrolyte slow mode{close_quotes} is related neither to stable species in solution nor to an intramolecular process. Oppositely, they confirm the intermolecular interaction character of the process. In addition, an interdiffusion of linear polyelectrolytes was measured for the first time. (2) Other sets of experiments were performed to analyze the possible role of non-electrostatic interactions in the mechanism of the slow mode. The solvent quality was changed by the choice of the polymer-solvent system and/or temperature. Results are in favor of electrostatic interaction. (3) The influence of the sample preparation procedure (filtration through different pore size filters and centrifugation) on experimental data will be discussed in the context of the slow mode.
