Block and graft copolymers with non-compatible segments are capable of self-assembly into microphase-separated structures. The incorporation of liquid-crystalline segments (LC) into block or graft copolymers leads to the possibility to combine two different self-organization phenomena: the liquid-crystalline order at a molecular level and the long range compositional order at a supra molecular level. This paper reports on a series of graft copolymers based on amorphous polystyrene grafts attached to a side chain LC-polymer backbone. The graft copolymers described in this paper were synthesized by the copolymerization of methacrylate terminated polystyrene macromonomers with mesogenic monomers. The properties of the graft copolymers will be compared with blends based on the corresponding side-chain LC homopolymer and macromonomers. Special emphasis is given to the liquid crystalline behavior and the supramolecular phase morphology.
