The thermal behavior of side chain liquid crystalline polymers with laterally attached mesogens will be presented. The thermotropic behavior of primarily polynorbornene-based polymers will be discussed as a function of molecular weight, length of the n-alkoxy substituent and of the unit connecting the mesogen to the polymer backbone. Enantiotropic nematic mesophases are obtained even when 2,5-bis[(4`-n-alkoxybenzoyl)oxy] mesogens are fused to polynorbornene backbones. The phase behavior becomes independent of molecular weight at approximately 25 repeat units, and the transition temperatures decrease with increasing length of the n-alkoxy substituent. The polymer backbone has very little effect on the transition temperatures of laterally attached SCLCPs displaying nematic mesophases.
