New side-chain ferroelectric liquid crystalline polymers were synthesized with cyanohydrin chiral mesogens. The structure and stability of this new class polymers are dependent on the nature of the polymer backbone and chiral mesogens as well as the length of the spacer segment. The optically active cyanohydrin moiety was synthesized from the naturally occurring optically active amino acids (L-Norleucine). The polysiloxanes were prepared by the hydrosilation of cyanohydrin monomers with poly(hydromethylsiloxane). All the polymers exhibit wide range of the chiral smectic C-phase.
