Synthesis and characterization of thermotropic liquid crystalline dendrimers
- Western Rserve Univ., Cleveland, OH (United States)
The authors have recently reported the first example of thermotropic liquid crystalline dendrimer. The synthesis of this dendrimer was accomplished by the homopolymerization of an A{sub 2}B tryp trifunctional monomer, 10-bromo-1-(4-hydroxy-4`-biphenyl)-2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)decane (TPD-b) followed by the alkylation of unreacted phenolate with various alkyl halides. This paper will describe the synthesis and characterization of dedrimers based on 6-bromo-1-(4-hydroxy-4`-biphenyl)-2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)hexane (TPH-b). The phase behavior of the resulting dendrimers with different chain ends (TPH-b-X, whose X indicates the structure of the chain end) will be discussed and compared to that of TPD-b-X series.
