The irradiation of oxygen-free, fcc C{sub 60} films with visible or ultraviolet light is found to phototransform C{sub 60} into a new solid phase. Results from laser mass desorption spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, Raman and infrared spectroscopy, optical absorption and luminescence are interpreted to indicate that a photopolymerization of the fullerene molecules within the film has occurred.
