The individual peaks of Xe, Xe{sub 2}, Xe{sub 3}, ...Xe{sub 8} clusters inside the alpha cages of zeolite NaA are well-resolved in the {sup 129}Xe NMR spectrum. The authors measure cage-to-cage rate constants for Xe motion using multisite magnetization transfer experiments. By selectively exciting Xe{sub 5} for example, the authors simultaneously study the rates of migration from alpha cages containing 5 Xe atoms into the other cages and vice versa. Also done is the complementary experiment of exciting all by Xe{sub 5}, which provides additional information. From the rates of magnetization transfer between resolved peaks one can deduce the rate constants k{sub nm} for one Xe atom migrating from a cage with n Xe atoms to a cage with m Xe atoms.
