New electronic states of the carbenes CH{sub 2} and CHF have been discovered using one-color resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionization (REMPI) spectroscopy. CH{sub 2}({tilde X} {sup 3}B{sub 1}) and CHF({tilde X} {sup 1}A{prime}) are generated by sequential reactions of fluorine atoms with methane. Vibrational and rotational analyses are presented for CHF. For detection purposes, the authors recommended 2+1 REMPI through the newly-discovered 3p Rydberg states. The origins of these transitions are at 311.80 nm and 327.71 nm for CH{sub 2} and CHF, respectively, and offer a detection limit of about 10{sup 7} cm{sup {minus}3}.
