The major differences between 4f (lanthanide) and 5f (actinide) block ions are due to the much larger spin-orbit coupling effects in the actinides and the much greater radical extent of the 5f wavefunctions (compared to the 4f shell). Russell-Sanders (LS) coupling is usually quite a good assumption for lanthanide ions and is used to describe their ground state properties, but this is not so in the actinides. Thus, when one compares the measured ground state electronic properties of a 4f{sup n} ion with is actinide counterpart, quite different results may be found. A number of examples of the much larger spin-orbit coupling and crystal field effects in the actinides will be given and discussed.
