High sensitivity pulsed neutron measurements of bulk plutonium contaminated wastes
- Pajarito Scientific Corporation, Los Alamos, NM (United States)
PSC has developed a patented pulsed neutron measurement technology that achieves 1 nCi/gm or better levels of assay sensitivity in bulk Plutonium neutrons from (n, fission) reactions are measured with high sensitivity in this technique, which is called the differential dieaway method. Among current implementation projects based on this technology are a 3m{sup 3} sized large box assay unit for use in the WRAP facility at Hanford and a 28-200-400 liter (variable size) unit for use in a large plutonium waste processing and storage facility in Europe. Both of these bulk wastes assay systems also incorporate PSC`s neutron imaging technology to achieve improved assay accuracy (position and matrix sensitive corrections). A large experimental data base documenting this technology will be presented and discussed in depth.
