Mound has been involved in calorimetry of radioactive materials since 1948. Mound calorimeters have been used to measure both plutonium and tritium for a variety of purposes. These include inventory accountability, shipper/receiver differences, product acceptance, audit verifications, process measurements, and standards calibrations. Mound has produced over 200 calorimeter systems that serve the D.O.E. plant sites in the USA and one system overseas in Ispra, Italy. Sample sizes have ranged from 0.25 in. diameter by 0.5 in. high to 12 in. diameter by 18 in. high. All Systems are custom designed to meet the specific requirements of the receiving plant site. Measurements from a few milliwatts to 250 watts have been made with the mound calorimeter systems. This presentation will discuss some of the unique, as well as normal, calorimeter systems and their capabilities.
