Isolation and recovery of {sup 88}Zr, {sup 88}Y, {sup 83}Rb, and {sup 65}Zn from proton irradiated molybdenum

Conference ·
OSTI ID:141182
The irradiation of molybdenum with the 800 MeV proton beam at LAMPF produces radioisotopes by spallation. This process is not specific and a large number of useful radioisotopes are produced. The chemical recovery of {sup 88}Zr, {sup 88}Y, {sup 83}Rb, and {sup 65}Zn from the targets is substantially completed during the ion exchange recovery of the {sup 82}Sr from the target. The radionuclides are largely separated in the sulfate fractions collected during the {sup 82}Sr procedure with 95% of the {sup 88}Zr in the first fraction and 95% of the {sup 83}Rb in the second fraction. The {sup 65}Zn is recovered in later fractions and the {sup 88}Y is recovered from the {sup 88}Zr after appropriate grow-in. Final purification is accomplished using additional ion exchange methods.
