  1. Los Alamos National Laboratory, NM (United States)
The spallation process for neutron production through medium energy proton interaction with materials will be described. This description will include the physics of beam-target interactions, a comparison of neutron production from fission and spallation processes, and a summary of the spallation neutron production experimental data base and calculational capabilities. In addition, the production of residual products that affect material balance assessments of accelerator-based transmutation systems will be addressed. The production of spallation products as a function of proton beam energy will be described, and results will be presented that represent initial predictions of the long-lived radionuclide production from neutron targets envisioned for the Accelerator Transmutation of Waste (ATW) concept. Decay heat data calculated for such targets will also be provided.
