Electrochemical intercalation of oxygen has been achieved at room temperature, in KOH solution and under anodic polarisation. The starting materials are oxide ceramics of {approximately} 80% compacity. Mossbauer spectroscopy of {sup 57}Fe has demonstrated the bulk character of the process. For the La{sub 2}NiO{sub 4} oxides, intercalation occurs, as previously described, inside the La{sub 2}O{sub 2} layer. For high rate of intercalation, oxygen species seem to be O associate in polyoxide O{sub 3}{sup 5{minus}} anions. They are ordered along the [111] direction of the tetragonal cell. In the NiO{sub 2} plane, a charge density wave occurs by electron transfer from planar to apical orbitals, inducing semiconducting behavior. The electronic configuration 3d{sup 9} of Cu{sup 2+} does not allow such transfer and induces a metallic behavior.
