BaBiO{sub 3} forms the ABO{sub 3} perovskite structure with Bi(II) and Bi(V) ions on the B sites. Control of the oxidation state behavior of the bismuth cations has led to superconductivity in compounds, such as Ba{sub 1{minus}x}K{sub x}BiO{sub 3} (0.37{le}x{le}0.45) and BaPb{sub 0.7}Bi{sub 0.3}O{sub 3}. Attempts to synthesize in air, the layered structures Ba{sub n+1}Bi{sub n}O{sub 2n+1} (0
