[Pd(triphospine)(S)](BF{sub 4}){sub 2} complexes (where S = CH{sub 3}CN or DMF) have been demonstrated to catalyze the electrochemical reduction of CO{sub 2} to CO. These complexes can exhibit high turnover rates and selectives. The effect of introducing heteroatoms such as carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen into the tridentate ligand will be discussed. These substitutions result in significant changes in rates and selectivities. Recent progress on developing homogenous catalysts for the electrochemical reduction of carbon monoxide will also be presented.
