Paramagnetic hydride clusters Cp*{sub n}M{sub N}H{sub m} (M = Cr, Co)

Reaction of [Cp*Co({mu}-Cl)]{sub 2} with LiAlH{sub 4} yielded two paramagnetic hydride complexes, namely Cp*{sub 2}Co{sub 2}({mu}-H){sub 3} (1) and Cp*{sub 3}Co{sub 3}H{sub 4} (2) 1 is identical to a complex, which was earlier prepared by reaction of cobalt atoms with Cp*H and misidentified as Cp*Co=CoCp*. Hydrogenolyses of chromium (II) alkyls produced the cubane clusters Cp*{sub 4}Cr{sub 4}({mu}{sub 3}-H){sub 4} (4). The molecular structures, magnetic and spectroscopic properties, and some reactions of these polynuclear hydrides will be described.
